Best steel for outdoor brackets
Mild steel with paint, galvanized, or stainless? What each one looks like after a few Canadian winters, and what it costs.
Three good choices.
Outdoor brackets in Canada fight snow, road salt and freeze-thaw. Plain mild steel starts to rust within weeks if it isn't protected. Here are the three ways to stop that, from lowest to highest price.

How to choose.
- Covered porch, shed or garage: mild steel with powder coat is fine and costs the least.
- Fully outdoors, practical look: hot-dip galvanized. It protects even where it gets scratched.
- Fully outdoors and it has to look good: galvanized under powder coat.
- Want bare metal with no coating at all: stainless, 316 if it's near salt or a pool.
Galvanizing is for steel only. Aluminum and stainless don't need it.
Small things that make a big difference.
- Use fasteners that match: galvanized bolts with galvanized brackets, stainless with stainless. Mixing metals can cause rust where they touch.
- Hollow parts going for galvanizing need small vent and drain holes. We add them where needed and show you on the quote.
