Galvanizing vs powder coating for outdoor steel
True Cut Metal · October 2026 · 3 min read
Both stop rust. They do it differently, and the best choice depends on where the part lives and how it has to look.
Galvanizing: maximum rust protection
Hot-dip galvanizing bonds zinc to the steel, inside and out, including edges and holes. If it gets scratched, the zinc around the scratch keeps protecting the steel. It's the go-to for railings, fences, farm equipment, trailers and anything left outside for decades. The finish is silver-grey and industrial.
Powder coating: colour and a clean look
Powder coating is a baked-on paint layer. It comes in many colours and finishes and looks great. But if it chips deeply, moisture can reach the bare steel underneath and rust can spread under the coating.
Want both? Use a duplex finish
Galvanize first, then powder coat over the zinc. You get colour plus the strongest rust protection available. It costs more, but it's the right call for outdoor parts that need to look good for a long time.
Rule of thumb
Indoors or sheltered: powder coat. Outdoors and practical: galvanize. Outdoors and visible: both.

Which costs more?
Powder coating usually costs a little less per part and comes in many colours. Galvanizing costs more and is always grey, but lasts decades outdoors with no upkeep. Doing both, called a duplex coating, costs the most but gives the longest life and a colour finish.
